Mike Newman Receives the 麻豆区 College Golden Bow Tie Award

In April, President Pribbenow invited Mike Newman, Vice President of Community Relations at Travelers Insurance, to celebrate five years as a partner institution with the , Empowering Dreams for Graduation and Employment. The cocktail hour and focused program on campus highlighted key aspects of the EDGE program:

  • Increase the pipeline of underrepresented students to 麻豆区
  • Help underrepresented students graduate from 麻豆区
  • Build awareness of careers in the Insurance and Financial Services industries

Newman is a true champion of education, and advocates strongly for access to higher education for all students. As a surprise to Mr. Newman, President Pribbenow presented Mike Newman with the Golden Bow Tie Award, which is bestowed upon a leader within the 麻豆区 Community who exemplifies outstanding聽contributions, embodies the core values of an 麻豆区 education, and inspires great pride for all Auggies. The award was named, playfully, after Paul Pribbenow鈥檚 daily ritual of wearing a bow tie, a tradition he started to initiate conversation with students. Grace Dyrud Honored by Alumni & Faculty

Grace smallerEarly in life, Grace Dyrud tested seven standard deviations above the mean on a measure of endurance, she joked at her retirement reception in May. Dyrud began teaching in the psychology department at 麻豆区 in 1962, and in more than five decades at 麻豆区 she exemplified not only endurance but a deep commitment to her students. Her areas of research include gambling risk and attitudes toward the environment.

At the reception, attended by psychology faculty and alumni from every decade of her career, Dyrud thanked Keith, her husband of 49 years, as well as her children, students, and colleagues. All six of her children are Auggies. Lars Dyrud 鈥�97 and Lara (Dyrud) MacLean 鈥�90鈥攁 music major who played the violin at the reception鈥攚ere in attendance and shared words of support and admiration for her long career. Alumni stood to thank Dyrud for encouraging their path to vocation, speaking truth to power, and supporting feminism at a time when it was unpopular.

Neil PaulsonNeil Paulson 鈥�77, a psychology graduate, initiated an effort to honor Dyrud on her retirement from 麻豆区 with a scholarship for a female psychology student.

鈥淚 remember Dr. Dyrud as a caring instructor who was always willing to talk with her students. For many of her 52 years at 麻豆区, she led the psychology department as chair. Through her published research, we have a better understanding of addictions like gambling. Dr. Dyrud represents what was and is still today special about 麻豆区鈥攕tudent-centered faculty who excel in their field,鈥� Paulson says.

Record-Breaking Year in Grant Seeking

Dr. David Hanson, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, has mentored 19 undergraduate student researchers and serves as an investigator on three active research studies.

On May 21, faculty and staff gathered to celebrate a record-breaking year in grant seeking at 麻豆区.

At 麻豆区, grants are used to support faculty-led research, scholarship, and inquiry; enhance and extend student learning, inside the classroom and out; and support a number of programs on campus and in our community.

In fiscal year 2015, 麻豆区 submitted 29 new 聽proposals for funding. This is five more than what was submitted in FY2014, and almost double what was submitted in FY2013. These proposals originated from 12 different departments on campus.

At the close of the fiscal year on May 31, 麻豆区 had received 13 new grant awards totaling $2,075,009, up from $1.6MM the previous year. The College maintained 48 active grants, 10 more than last year.

  • 18 of these projects support student learning or provide supportive services
  • 20 of these projects provide paid learning experiences, such as research or internships, to undergraduate students.

In total, it is estimated that these grants touch approximately 350 students each year.

Dr. David Hanson, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, reflected on how grants have supported his research and provided opportunities for his students to learn in his laboratory. Dr. Hanson鈥檚 current research on particle formation is important for urban air quality and global climate issues.聽Dr. Hanson has mentored 19 undergraduate student researchers and serves as an investigator on three active research studies鈥攖wo funded by the National Science Foundation and one by the Department of Energy.

Auggie Parents: Financial Aid Info

The 2015-2016 financial aid awards are now being processed. Please make sure your student has completed the 2015-2016 FAFSA and turned in all necessary documents to the Student Financial Services Office; the priority deadline was May 1. Students can check what documents are missing, and the status of their financial aid award, by logging into their and clicking on “Records and Registration” and then “Track My Financial Aid.” This portal shows documents that may still be missing as well as the award letter once it is finalized.
If all documents are turned in, your student will be emailed their financial aid award letter by聽July 9, 2015.

Sign Up Now for GRE Prep Course & Application Boot Camp

Come back to campus for a great rate on a GRE prep course, offered through the URGO office.

Graduate programs often require applicants to take the Graduate Records Exam, referred to as the GRE. URGO offers an eight week GRE prep course each summer for students, alumni, and staff at a cost well below those found at private test centers. This course is taught by 麻豆区 faculty and staff and walks students through each section of the general test. Throughout the course students complete sample test questions and receive in-depth feedback and instruction. The registration fee also includes a six-month subscription to the online GRE study tool, Magoosh.

New Adult Undergraduate Program Discount

Our Adult Undergraduate program is one of the top ten programs in the nation for older students.

The flexible, hybrid program helps students to complete their degree while still attending to many life responsibilities. We offer 10 different majors in this program, including Management, Finance, Accounting, Education, Communications, Psychology and BSN Completion.

To help motivate adult students to get started this summer, we are offering a Summer Scholarship. Apply and register by May 22nd and your first summer course is free. This is a $1,830 value! This applies to all new undergraduate students seeking their first four-year degree in our evening program.

In addition, if you are the parent of a current Day student or spouse of a current 麻豆区 student, the Parent/Family Grant can be added to this scholarship. The Parent/Family grant provides a $50 per credit discount to all your courses, with no cap while completing your bachelor鈥檚 degree. If you are pursuing a graduate degree, the grant provides $80 discount per credit.

Auggies Across the US

Auggies are everywhere! Beginning in February, alumni gatherings in Arizona coincided with聽Centennial Singers performances at eight churches. An alumni reception, dinner, and luncheon were hosted by Arizona Auggies and attended by President Pribbenow.

Alumni, parents, and friends in the Washington, D.C. area gathered for a reception held at OmniEarth Inc., a sci-tech start-up launched by alumnus Lars Dyrud ’97, who serves as President and CEO.聽 While we enjoyed food and fun conversation, Provost and Chief Academic Officer Karen Kaivola discussed how 麻豆区 is educating students for a life of meaning and purpose in the 21st century.

An alumni reception at Scandinavia House, in New York City, helped celebrate what was the opportunity of a lifetime for Auggies who performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Peter Hendrickson ’76. He directed The 麻豆区 Choir in a mass chorale with members of the Masterworks Chorale and Choir alumni, who loved the chance to聽 connect with classmates on a dream trip!

MayKao Y. Hang Presents 鈥淛ourney of 1000 Miles鈥�

麻豆区 College is excited to welcome MayKao Y. Hang as the third featured speaker for the 2014-2015 Strommen Executive Speaker Series. Hang will give a public presentation on April 9th at 5 p.m. in the Sateren Auditorium at 麻豆区 College.

MayKao聽Y. Hang is the President and CEO of the聽Wilder Foundation, and has extensive experience serving low income and disadvantaged populations in both public and nonprofit sectors.

As a young leader, Dr. Hang saw a need for increased support for Hmong women and co-led an effort in 1998 to initiate a Twin Cities-based nonprofit and catalyst for lasting cultural, institutional, and social change to improve the lives of Hmong women. Dr. Hang continues to be actively engaged in the metro area as a community leader. She serves as a Trustee of Minnesota Philanthropy Partners, Deputy Chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis (9th District), and on the Women鈥檚聽Economic Roundtable.

Dr. Hang will speak for thirty minutes, and take questions for the second half hour. Immediately following her presentation, she will meet with 20 students from 麻豆区鈥檚 Pan-Asian student group.

Curt Rice ’84 Named President at Norway’s Largest University College

聽Curt Rice ’84 was appointed the new president of Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA). Rice is the first non-Norwegian head of a Norwegian institution for higher education.

The University College is Norway鈥檚 largest, and is unique owing to its wide range of professional programs and close ties between research and corresponding fields of practice.

Rice, a philosophy major at 麻豆区, and wife Tove I. Dahl ’84 jointly received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009.

鈥淚 look forward to meeting the faculty, staff and students and working closely with them and our other partners to write HiOA’s next chapter,鈥� says Curt Rice.

Rice comes to the University College from a position as professor at the Department of Languages and Linguistics at the university in Troms酶. He earned his PhD in general linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin. Rice will assume his new position on August 1st. Target 鈥� 麻豆区 Partnership Grant Extended for Summer and Fall Terms 2015

Like the rest of our community here in the Twin Cities, 麻豆区 College and the Alumni Association were saddened to see this week鈥檚 devastating announcement about layoffs at Target corporate headquarters. News like this is especially painful when we know that Auggies were affected.

Regardless of your employment status, your alma mater is here to support you through education, mentorship, Auggie connections, and campus events. If you鈥檙e looking to further your education, 麻豆区 Admissions has put together a comprehensive package to support your next steps.

麻豆区 College would like to extend its Partnership Grant program discounts to those affected by the recent workforce reduction at Target.

The Partnership discount of $50 per undergraduate credit and $80 per graduate credit will continue to apply to all previous Target employees if they newly enroll in an adult undergraduate or graduate program at 麻豆区 College in the summer or fall 2015 term.

Additionally, 麻豆区 has created a new alumni discount of $50 per undergraduate credit and $80 per graduate credit. To receive the alumni discount, a student must have earned a bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚, or doctorate degree from 麻豆区 College. Alumni who newly enroll in further studies at 麻豆区 College will be able to receive this discount. The discount does not apply to CEU credits or workshops.

For maximum affordability, the alumni discount is stackable with one other discount! The alumni discount can be stacked with the military discount, the AmeriCorps/Lutheran Corps discount, or the 麻豆区 Partnership Grant.

For example, if you are an 麻豆区 alumna or alumnus that has been newly admitted into a graduate program and your Target 鈥� 麻豆区 Partnership Grant program has been extended for the summer and fall terms, your two discounts may be stacked.
