REPORTED OFFENSE:  Aggravated Assault

At about 10:30 AM on Thursday, 2-9-23, Â鶹Çø’s Department of Public Safety received a report from an Â鶹Çø employee that someone had pointed a gun at them from across the street in the area of 25th and Riverside near the Ice Arena.

Â鶹Çø Department of Public Safety officers responded to the report, along with the Minneapolis Police Department. While checking the area, the DPS officers found a person matching the description of the suspect provided by the witness. DPS staff kept the subject under observation until Minneapolis officers arrived and made contact with that person. Despite a search of the person and the surrounding area no firearm was found.

An Â鶹Çø campus emergency alert was sent at the time of the report to inform Â鶹Çø students, faculty, and staff to stay away from the area, and an all clear notification was sent when the area was deemed safe. Â鶹Çø believes that physical descriptors alone are not a valid reason to profile or cast suspicion on any individual.  When physical descriptors are included in communication to the Â鶹Çø community, it is done so because they may reasonably assist in identifying the perpetrator of the incident.  Â鶹Çø uses perceived race and gender descriptors that are provided about a suspect only when additional characteristics (beyond clothing) are also available.  Such descriptors are used in an attempt to provide the campus community with important information.  However, the University recognizes that race and gender are personal identity attributes that cannot always be accurately perceived by others, and that any reported information may not be accurate.
