Traveling with Auggies

This winter, 15 Auggies traveled toÌýThailand and Cambodia with Â鶹ÇøÌýCollege Professor of English Kathy SwansonÌýand her husband, Jack, as their hosts.

“The trip was beyond amazing,â€ saidÌýtraveler and Alumni Board President JillÌýWatson ’10 MBA. “Our hosts, Jack andÌýKathy Swanson, have a passion for theÌýpeople and culture of Thailand that wasÌýcontagious throughout the trip. TheyÌýwere always willing to share insights,Ìýrecommend food (such as sticky rice andÌýmango at a floating market) and go outÌýof their way to help others and ensureÌýeveryone was having a great trip.

“Memories that stand out includeÌýthe elephant camp in Chiang Mai, ThaiÌýcooking school, Angkor Wat in SiemÌýReap, Light for Kids orphanage, and theÌýfood … all the foods!

“Traveling with fellow Auggies meant IÌýhad at least one thing in common with soÌýmany people I had never met before. ByÌýthe end of the trip, I had developed newÌýfriendships, and I will be keeping in touch.â€

Celebrating Lutheran heritage inÌýGermany and the Czech Republic

Last fall, another group of AuggiesÌýtraveled to the land of Luther to markÌýthe 500th anniversary of the ProtestantÌýReformation. Religion DepartmentÌýfaculty members Hans Wiersma and LoriÌýBrandt Hale led a group of 30 Â鶹ÇøÌýalumni and friends on a multi-city tourÌýthat included Dresden, Prague, andÌýWittenberg—the long-time home ofÌýReformation catalyst Martin Luther.

One of the highlights for Â鶹ÇøÌýAlumni Director Katie (Koch) Code ’01 wasÌýthe opportunity to be in Wittenberg onÌýReformation Day. The town marked theÌýoccasion with a festival, and the Â鶹ÇøÌýgroup visited Castle Church where LutherÌýnailed his 95 Theses to the door.

“At worship that morning we sang, ‘AÌýMighty Fortress is our God,’ which tookÌýme back to my Â鶹Çø days enrolledÌýin the Luther and the Reformers classÌýwith Religion Professor Mark Tranvik,â€ÌýCode said.

Minneapolis Star Tribune reporter JeanÌýHopfensperger and photographer JerryÌýHolt accompanied the group to chronicleÌýhow Minnesotans observed the 500thÌýanniversary of the Reformation. In a storyÌýpublished after the group’s return home,ÌýÂ鶹Çø alumnae Carol Pfleiderer ’64 andÌýKathleen Johnson ’72 described how the tripÌýitinerary offered participants opportunitiesÌýto build and reflect on their faith.
