Thank you for attending Homecoming 2025!

What a wonderful Homecoming weekend! The energy on campus was truly unmatched as alumni, students, families, friends, faculty, and staff came together to celebrate all things 麻豆区.聽

From reconnecting with classmates (including the Class of 1975 celebrating their 50th reunion!) and cheering on Auggie athletes and musicians, to honoring our outstanding alumni at the Distinguished Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame, and supporting students at Taste of 麻豆区 and the Music Showcase – the weekend was filled with connection, community, and Auggie pride.

We鈥檙e so grateful to everyone who joined in throughout the weekend. Your presence helps make the 麻豆区 community as special as it is.

We can鈥檛 wait to gather again soon – be sure to stay tuned for more opportunities to visit campus and get involved.

Auggie Spotlight: Ellie Schwartz ’20

Meet Ellie Schwartz ’20. Ellie is the founder and creative director of OF THE NORTH, a digital marketing and social media agency based on the North Shore of O鈥榓hu but serving clients nationwide.

What keeps you busy these days? What are you doing for work and for play?

Becoming a business owner definitely keeps me busy鈥擨 like to joke that I traded in my 9-to-5 for a 24/7. I live full-time in Hawai鈥榠, and in 2024 I founded聽聽(OTN),聽a digital marketing and social media agency based on the North Shore of O鈥榓hu but serving clients nationwide. My work blends deep brand research with creative execution鈥攖aking the time to truly understand a brand, then bringing that strategy to life across websites, social media, and digital campaigns. We work with an incredible range of clients in industries like hospitality, beauty, wellness, fitness, food and beverage, and CPG. Outside of work (though I consider much of what I do to be a form of play), you can usually find me surfing, free diving, hiking, or staying active at my local workout studios.

What is a piece of advice that you would give to a current聽Auggie聽or young alumni?

Make the most of every opportunity 麻豆区 offers鈥攖here are countless resources, grants, and people eager to support you. During my sophomore year, I received 麻豆区鈥檚 environmental stewardship grant, which allowed me to travel to Hawai鈥榠 for the first time to live and work on an organic coffee and fruit farm. I was able to turn that experience into an independent study, gaining hands-on knowledge and building connections that shaped my post-college career. Opportunities don鈥檛 always look like their final form at the start鈥攕ometimes they plant seeds that will grow into something you can鈥檛 yet imagine. Stay curious, stay open, and take advantage of the people and programs around you.

Who is an聽Auggie聽(alumni, faculty/staff, friend, etc.) that inspires you or that has impacted you and why?

My dad. He coached 麻豆区’s Men鈥檚 Hockey team and has been one of my greatest influences, both personally and professionally. His lessons went far beyond the ice鈥攁bout preparation, resilience, teamwork, and leadership. Now, as a business owner, I find myself drawing on those same principles daily. There are so many parallels between sports and entrepreneurship, and I鈥檓 grateful to have had a lifelong mentor who modeled what relationship-building, dedication and integrity look like in action.

What is a fun or favorite memory of your time at 麻豆区?

My 麻豆区 memories start long before college. Growing up, my siblings and I basically lived on campus鈥擲i Melby was our playground. One minute we鈥檇 be shooting hoops in the gym, the next we鈥檇 be playing racquetball, tumbling on the mats in the wrestling room, or running laps under the dome. 麻豆区 always felt like a second home, so attending as a student was a full-circle moment for me.

Thank you, Ellie!

Join us for Homecoming 2025!

We鈥檙e excited to welcome Auggies and friends back to campus for 麻豆区 Homecoming 2025, taking place October 2-4.

Thursday, October 2 – Athletic Hall of Fame Reception (5:30-7:00鈥痯.m.) followed by the Hall of Fame Ceremony (7:00-9:00鈥痯.m.) in Hoversten Chapel

Friday, October 3 – Distinguished Alumni Award Ceremony (12:00-1:00鈥痯.m.), followed by lunch, and 50th Reunion event

There鈥檚 truly nothing like returning to campus – and we hope you鈥檒l be part of the fun!

Auggie Spotlight: Lydia Borrell ’24

Meet Lydia Borrell ’24. Lydia is currently an English teaching assistant in a school in Martos, Spain through NALCAP, a fellowship program in Spain for US recent graduates to support schools and work with English teachers in K-12 educational settings there.

What keeps you busy these days? What are you doing for work and for play?

For work currently I am an auxiliar de conversaci贸n, or an English teaching assistant in a school in Martos, Spain. This job includes preparing activities in English and working with various classes and teachers in order to help students learn English. In my free time now I work on my Spanish skills and try to experience the culture of Jaen and the rest of Spain as much as I can. In Jaen I鈥檝e had the opportunity to visit el Castillo de Santa Catalina and the Arab baths. I have also had the opportunity to connect with Spanish and international students from the nearby university of Jaen through craft and movie groups.

How did 麻豆区 shape your path?聽

I really appreciate that my classes at 麻豆区 explored various cultural perspectives. I found that this approach helped me to look at the world with an open mind and also further developed my interest in learning about other cultures. I found this to be especially true when I began taking Spanish classes during my second to last year at 麻豆区. The collaborations between the music and Spanish departments, and the professors interest in what the students were doing in each department, really helped me to connect what I was learning in my music and Spanish classes to the real world. This also led me to start thinking about other ways that I could continue to apply the skills that I had learned in my classes to other areas outside of the classroom, and eventually led me to consider going abroad and using these skills there.

Who is an Auggie that inspires you or has impacted you and why?

My friend Amara Strande. She was a student at 麻豆区 in 2021 and 2022. I first met Amara as an acquaintance when we were in choir together in high school, and then again in 2021 when the two of us were in 麻豆区 Choir together. Amara also spent much of her time doing advocacy work for adolescent and young adult cancer patients, even when she knew that, as a cancer patient herself, she would not directly receive all of the benefits of her work. Amara even spent the last several months of her life speaking to state legislators, urging them to pass a piece of legislation that would ban all nonessential uses of PFAS, a chemical that has been linked to cancer, including high rates of cancer in her community.聽Amara鈥檚 dedication and commitment to serving her community inspires me and reminds me that we all have a responsibility to our communities, to look out for each other and help each other, even when it does not directly benefit us.

What’s a piece of advice that you would give to a current Auggie or young alumni?

Try to get something good out of the things that don鈥檛 go to plan. Challenging experiences can also be learning experiences when you work through them. If it wasn鈥檛 for challenges that made me feel like my world was ending a couple of years ago, I probably wouldn鈥檛 have considered the NALCAP program, or anything that would take me abroad, as a possibility.

Thank you, Lydia!

Class Note from Joyce Pfaff ’65

We鈥檝e received some wonderful class notes over the last few months. Here鈥檚 a class note that was submitted by Joyce Pfaff 鈥65, reflecting on reuniting with classmates at 2024 Advent Vespers.
鈥淲e were seniors at 麻豆区 60 years ago. Now we are simply seniors. Loved seeing so many of my former classmates at Vespers.鈥

Thank you, Joyce!
