Blessing the Auggie animals

by Katie Johnson-ClarkPastor Babette Chatman blesses the cat of Pastoral Intern Sarah Root.

鈥淚 know you鈥檙e not supposed to have favorite chapel services, but this one ranks up there,鈥 University Pastor Babette Chatman said from the front of Hoversten Chapel, smiling at 麻豆区 community members and their pets.

Blessing of the Animals is an annual chapel service in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. In remembrance of his love for all sentient beings, individuals around the world bring their animal companions to church for a Blessing of the Animals for St. Francis Day on October 4. 麻豆区 Campus Ministry provided that same opportunity for Auggies on Friday, October 2. Some community members submitted photos of their pets that played on a slideshow throughout the service. Others brought their creatures to campus for an in-person blessing.

University Pastors John Schwehn and Chatman presented a litany interspersed with the audience singing 鈥淎ll God鈥檚 Creatures Got a Place in the Choir.鈥 Schwehn then presented a sermon, sharing how a kitten found in his backyard last year became an integral part of their family. He described how everyone in that chapel was connected鈥攏ot because they were all part of the 麻豆区 community, or because they were all Christian, or because they were all even the same species. He said all pets and people were connected because they were created by God in the image of love, as St. Francis deeply believed.

Chatman and Schwehn then traveled between rows of seats to greet every animal. They blessed them by placing their hands onto each furry creature and offering a benediction over them. For those who couldn鈥檛 bring their animals in person, they offered a blessing over a shared image.

The service ended with this closing prayer:

鈥淏less them who will never be entirely tamed and so remind us that you love what is wild, that you rejoice in what lives close to the earth, that your heart beats in the heart of these creatures you have entrusted to our care.鈥

Ramadan Mubarak 鈥 A Reflection and Warm Wishes to Our 麻豆区 Community

By Imam Sharif Mohamed, 麻豆区 Muslim Chaplain

鈥 The first day of Ramadan is expected to begin on February 18
鈥 Eid al-Fitr is anticipated to be celebrated on March 18

Dear 麻豆区 Leadership, Staff, and Students,

As the blessed month of Ramadan approaches, I would like to extend my warmest greetings and heartfelt wishes to all members of our 麻豆区 community.

Ramadan Mubarak.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, observed by Muslims around the world as a sacred time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal. From dawn to sunset, many Muslim students, staff, and faculty abstain from food and drink while engaging more deeply in acts of worship, charity, self-discipline, and community service.

Beyond fasting, Ramadan is a time centered on values that resonate universally 鈥 compassion, generosity, patience, gratitude, and care for one another. It is a season that invites individuals to slow down, reflect on their purpose, repair relationships, and recommit to justice and human dignity.

Within a university setting like 麻豆区 鈥 rooted in inclusion, neighbor-love, and the dignity of all people 鈥 Ramadan offers an opportunity not only for observance, but also for shared understanding and community support.

What Ramadan May Look Like on Campus

鈥 Fasting from dawn until sunset (no food or drink during daylight hours)
鈥 Increased prayer and spiritual practices
鈥 Evening meals (Iftar) to break the fast at sunset
鈥 Late-night prayers, which may affect sleep schedules
鈥 Heightened focus on charity, service, and community care

While many continue their academic and professional responsibilities as usual, fasting can be physically and spiritually demanding 鈥 especially during longer days.

You may also notice lower energy levels among some students and staff, particularly in the late afternoon hours, as the body adjusts to fasting.

How We Can Support One Another

Small gestures of awareness and care go a long way. For example:

鈥 Being mindful when scheduling food-centered meetings or events
鈥 Offering flexibility, when possible, for prayer times, evening commitments, and workload responsibilities
鈥 Creating welcoming spaces that foster belonging and respect
鈥 Extending simple words of kindness such as 鈥淩amadan Mubarak鈥 (Blessed Ramadan)
鈥 Supporting access to Suhur (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (sunset meal) options through campus dining or cafeteria flexibility when feasible
鈥 Estimated Suhur and Iftar times may vary daily by approximately five to ten minutes
鈥 Avoiding, when possible, scheduling major exams or required academic activities on the day of Eid

Support does not require perfection 鈥 only presence, empathy, and goodwill.

An Invitation to Shared Values

Ramadan also offers a moment for collective reflection across faiths and traditions.

It calls us to ask:

How do we care for the vulnerable?
How do we cultivate gratitude in difficult times?
How do we build a community rooted in mercy and justice?

These questions transcend religion 鈥 they speak to our shared humanity and to 麻豆区鈥檚 mission of educating for service, leadership, and meaningful engagement in the world.

Closing Reflection

In the Islamic tradition, Ramadan is described not only as a month of fasting, but as a month of mercy 鈥 a time to heal hearts, restore hope, and strengthen the bonds of community.

It is my sincere prayer that this Ramadan brings peace to our campus, clarity to our purpose, and compassion to our interactions with one another.

May this month be a source of spiritual renewal for those who observe it, and a season of learning and connection for our entire 麻豆区 family.

Ramadan Mubarak to all who are observing.

With warm regards and prayers for peace,

A Prayer for those impacted by the violence between Israel and Hamas

A prayer for all whose lives and spirits are impacted by the current violence between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza strip.

Peace be within your walls and security within your towers. For the sake of my relatives and friends I will say, 鈥淧eace be within you.鈥 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good. (Psalm 122)

God of Shalom, source of all that is good and just: We pray for all the lives lost in and around the Gaza Strip as a result of the Hamas-led terrorist attacks over the weekend. We know you weep with all families who are grieving the deaths of their loved ones. We pray for the safe return of those who are being held hostage. Oh God, we know there are many innocent people caught in the middle of this war. And our neighbors near and far carry great fear and trauma from this unrest, and from the disease of hate. For impacted members of our 麻豆区 community, we pray for your strength and well-being. We see you, we care for you, and we are holding you close in prayer and in the Light of Christ who is our Prince of Peace. We pray that love and peace prevail, that the families and friends of this community be protected, and that this unfortunate war will end soon.听

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Amen

A Prayer for This Time of Loss听

To the family, friends, and beloved community of Sabiriin Ali, Sahra Gesaade, Sagal Hersi, Siham Odhowa, and Salma Abdikadir, tragically killed by a reckless driver last weekend:

麻豆区 Campus Ministry holds you all in continual light and love as you grieve the loss of such lives of promise. In times like this words fail to express the depth of sorrow and pain, anger and fear experienced within a community.听听

We all lean on our faith and understanding of a loving, faithful and compassionate God. Who we take comfort in trusting and believing with these young women, these rays of light, God was present with them. And God weeps with us in sorrow.

We offer this prayer for all who join their hearts in this tragic loss:

Jesus, You said, 鈥淏lessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted,鈥 (Matthew 5:4).听

Our community and friends are mourning. Send us Your comfort now. Wrap Your arms around them and hold them tight. Send angels of mercy to them. Shower Your comfort on them, on us all through those around us. Please guide the surviving family members of Sabiriin Ali, Sahra Gesaade, Sagal Hersi, Siham Odhowa, and Salma Abdikadir and help them recover from their loss. Take away their pain and help them bear it. We trust and hope You are mending the brokenness in ways we can鈥檛 always see. Keep far from them those whose words and actions are of no comfort.听听

We pray for peace. In Jesus鈥 name we pray, Amen.
